My music Year end extravaganza

Top 9 albums of 2006
Technically a lot of these CD's are from 2005 which doesn't say much about my music hipsterishness but whatever, these disks are still what I am listening to on my ultimate driving mix tape/mp3! If you want to listen to the songs, I have provided a download link at the bottom of the post that contains all the songs I talk about in the post. I really do suggest that If you find a song you like to please buy the whole album. I am more than willing to support piracy when the song you are downloading is "sexy back" by that poseur Justin Timberlake (though I would really wish you had better taste) as he has already made his cash, but most of these bands could use your support!

The Bravery, The Bravery. This is a solid CD, great for road trips. I am very much looking forward to their new disk coming out in 2007.
Best Song: Out of line

Fischerspooner, Odyssey. I discovered this band a month or so back while reading a gay music blog. Micheal Stipe of REM was talking about them. I had heard of the band before but never really had the chance to check out their music. The CD is filled with great songs I just wish I had found it sooner!
Best Song: Just let go

Cansei De Ser Sexy, Cansei De Ser Sexy. I had heard about them a while back because of the song "lets make love to Death from above". Now I figured that any band that like DFA1979 can't be half bad. The disk is filled with fun simple lyrics and great beats!
Best Song: Music is my hot sex

The Cardigans, Super Extra gravity. Remember "love fool'? that incredibly catchy tune from the 1990's. Well the cardigans may be best known for that song in North America, over the pond they have been putting out some great music. Plus any band that can make a song with a title this long (it is also one of the best songs on the album) I need some fine wine and you, you need to be nicer and still make it catchy is getting a thumbs up in my book.

M.I.A, Arular. The slick raps, cool beats and toung in cheek lyrics what is not to love about M.I.A?
Best song: Hombre

Of Montreal, Sunlandic twins. Great light summer CD perfect for long slow drives in the country with the windows down.
Best Song: So begins our alabee

MSTRKRFT, The looks. You have heard me gush about this group before so I will keep it short. BUY THIS DISK your groove thang will thank you.
Best Song: Easy Love

Cadence Weapon, Breaking Keyfabe. I am not a big fan of rap buuut that being said there is something inherently cool about hearing your home town (Edmonton) rapped about. Much like Kanye (without the narcissism and insanity of course) Cadence Weapon avoids the many rap cliches with smart lyrics. This isn't ghetto rap its much better.
Best Song: Oliver square

Controller.Controller, X-amounts. Maybe it is because I have seem them live twice in the past year or maybe it is because i love the "thump thump" that permeates all of there songs, but I can't seem to stop listening to X-Amounts.
Best Song: City of Daggers

Favorite Album of 2006
Shout out out out out, Not saying just saying. They are being hailed as the best thing to come out of the Edmonton music scene in years. This CD is the first step to total world domination. Better than anything Daft punk has put out in years this disk is a must have for anyone! Seriously buy one for you Grandma she could probably use the cardio workout that she will get when the catchy dance/pop takes control. Best Song: Dude you feel electrical

Favorite Songs of 2006
7/4 (Shoreline) - Broken Social scene. I don't know what it is about Leslie Feist but something in her voice in this song hits me emotionally somehow. I often find Broken Social Scene's music too cluttered and overproduced somehow but this song stand out amongst all others.

Heartbeat- MSTRKRFT. On three separate occasions in my car while driving people around this song has come on and someone has commented on how we should go dancing because it got them in the mood. It is infectious it may have to be labeled as dangerous. If this were the town in Footloose even uber conservative John Lithgow would have been moved to dance wildly and perhaps even shirtless.

Favorite Mash-ups of 2006
Walking with a ghost in pairs -Tegan & Sara vs. Mylo. I have been known to enjoy T&S on occasion but this mash-up took a good song and made it great!

Yur Hung up- M.I.A vs. Madonna, DjMonsterMo. This is the one and only time you will ever find Madonna on here. I think she is overplayed and generally overrated especially at the gay bars (why is it that most gay guys have such terrible taste in music?). This song is what started my love for M.I.A and mash-ups in general and I am eternally grateful for Ryan for passing it on to me.

Favorite Remixes
Kennedy Killed the hat (MSTRKRFT remix) - Buck 65
When I was a young girl (vw remix) - Feist

Favorite Videos
Work on You- MSTRKRFT
Old school transformers style animation combined with kick ass beats! How could this not be the best video of the year!

Monster Hospital- Metric
Creepy but perfect for the tone of the song and the album. If i were straight Emily Haines would be my main girl crush, i love her!

Biggest Disappointments Musically of 2006
The new scissor sisters, bloc party and peaches albums just did not do it for me this year. However, the biggest disappointment would have to be missing the Shout out out out out and MSTRKRFT show at the Citadel tomorrow night. It is going to be a kick ass awesome show. Tickets were too expensive :( and i found out too late about it to get the cheaper ones.

DOWNLOAD LINK FOR SONGS: Get em all here. This uses Sendspace the download link should be in the middle of the page somewhere.

Well that was that, Aaaaaaand I'm spent!

I am having really shitty luck with computers this week. Nothing has been working the way I need it to and critical things are breaking at the absolute worst times.

I just finished watching Pan's Labyrinth. A griping story of a girl split between the harsh realities of living under Franco in Spain during the civil war and an even harsher but more wondrous fantasy realm. I really wanted to fall asleep but I had to finish the movie ( I am neurotic like that). The movie was so beautiful and horrifying at the same time. While I can appreciate the artistry of Del Toro's (the director) work I am just to emotionally exhausted to really be in a good place to review it. Del Toro has always had an eye for well put together visually stunning yet slightly twisted work, I was just unprepared for the seriousness of it.

It definitely tugs at the heart strings and makes you care about what is happening so I know it was a well put together piece. Something just seemed to be missing but I am not sure what. I think it was missing some of the light-heartedness that exists in childhood. How can a fantasy movie not have any laughter (or perhaps that is the whole point)? Either way I am thinking I should have watched Mean Girls instead tonight and saved this for when I could commit myself better to it (because it definitely requires some commitment).

Still if you get a chance check it out I guarantee it is like nothing you have ever seen (the last time I said something like that it was about the intriguing but flawed Lady in the water and this movie totally blows Lady in the water away).

Good tidings we bring...

So much has changed for me in such a small period of time.

I have so much to be thankful for.

These next few months are going to be a rollercoaster.

I can't help but wonder if this is the last Christmas for a while that I will be spending with my family.

All closeted drama aside I wish you all a very merry Christmas and hope that the coming year is filled with joy.

Expect some year end wrap up blogs from me next week.

Now I am off to go over-eat rich ukrainian food and get asked awkward questions about where my girlfriend is. Yay me!

An Open Letter to the Golden Globes Commitee

So I saw your nominations for you little awards show. Overall I thought they were ok (sure you nominated a perenial overactor, I am looking at you mister Pitt). I just have one question are you guys fucking blind? How could you not nominate Battlestar Galactica for best Drama? As much as I love heroes, 24 and lost seriously do you really think any of these shows stack up against the best written show on television (perhaps ever).

All you have to do is watch the most recent episode which almost made me cry. Now I know I m not the butchest monkey in the barrel but seriously I do not cry due to TV often (try never). SO go get a clue commitee and check this show out. Give it the recognition it really deserves!

This is why you should never buy a Dell!

My company out of habit buys Dells for locations. I am not sure why we buy them. Perhaps it is the consistency of there availability or the price (or just an old habit I have yet to break). I hate Dell. The machines come clogged with irrelavent software that is worse than any virus infection that i have seen. Today while troublehooting some brand new Dell Dimension e521's with our company's software i spent almost an hour removing the various packaged limited trial programs on it.

Why did I do this you ask? Well other than the fact that all of the programs they have on there are useless (corel photoalbum, musicmatch jukebox, the list goes on and on) I went to install our software via CD. I pop the CD into the drive and hear it start to spin. Up pops up corel photoalbum saying that it has found pictures on the CD and asks if i want to put them in the album I click no and proceed to go to the CD by clicking on the drive. Nothing happens.
I click explore.
Nothing happens.
I click search.
Nothing happens.
I type out the address of our software folder.
Nothing Happens.
I remove the CD (which by the way has worked on three other computers perfectly).
Test the drive by using another cd with a self starting prompt.
That seems to work.
I try our CD again and corel photo comes up again. This time I let corel do its thing and it finds all the pictures on the cd so that means the computer is reading the CD.
I proceed to go to my computer and do all the steps i did before and nothing is getting me into the CD.
I removed all the software that wasnt windows or driver related and it worked fine. Lesson to everyone please do not buy a Dell!

Cookie baking madnesss!!! & a Milestone

So ladies and gentlemen this is officially my 100th post on blogger! I wonder if i have actually said anything of worth in all this time (contemplative pause) nope i guess not so here is some pictures from Erin's great Christmas Cookie baking extravaganza! She threw a great party with an amazing spread of food . We cooked like small Asian child labourers and tobogganed our collective assess off ! If you look at the guy in the blue on the right (Lucas) see how hard he is concentrating!? It was his first time baking cookies! We totally popped that cherry all over the place.

I am amazed at how much Chels looks like Leslie Feist in this pic. You may know Feist from those ever catchy Lacost commercials. You may know Chelsea from those ever popular Wanton Hussy nights.

Post tobogganing, this is my "my bum is soo damp face". Allison is clearly totally into it.

This is how the parkies do Chess, Drinking style!

So this is apparently what happens when you pop some one's cookie baking cherry.

Mmmmmm messy cherry poppin goodness!

An open letter to the game of poker.

OK mister you and I have had a passing knowledge of each other for the past year or so. Now i have been wary of you for a long time but at the behest of my buddies I have tried to associate with you. We would meet at parties and awkwardly feel each other out like teenagers on there first dates. We never got into anything too seriously a 10 dollar buy in here, a 50 dollar pot there.

Really i feel like the relationship just isn't working out for me. It just doesn't feel like i am getting anything out of the relationship, especially lately. I give and give and give and all i get is some harassed and mocked for my performance. Now i know i don't put forward the best performance and yes i admit that I use a cheat sheet to help me along. Maybe it is because i don;t really understand the way you work . I admit my shortcomings with math and numbers but really you have got to start showing that you give back into the relationship or I am going to have to stop associating with you.

P.S. I want my money back you bitch!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How did i not know about this show??? Seriously Shout out out out out and MSTRKRFT in one place in my own town! I may be willing to auction off my left nut on ebay to go to a show like that.

I just checked and tickets are $ 53.00 each which officially puts them way out of my range. Plus I should be spending new years with Kyle and I don't think he would enjoy the booty thumping electronica of both these bands. :(

And That is Why I am Glad I am Canadian

Well Stephen Harper you have successfully wasted government time in a pathetic attempt to gain voter support by using divisive politics and fear mongering against lesbian and gay community. Now were this the United States those tactics may have worked, thankfully however Canadians don't seem to react to hate and fear in the same way that your stateside, christian fundamentalist, neo-con financial backers hoped.

It has been a good month so far for the queer community. First mildly insane (US backed) Alberta progressive conservative leadership candidate Ted Morton was trounced by a quietly gay friendly (at least so far) Ed Stelmach. Personally I was shocked at how far Morton made it in the leadership bid with his uber right wing platform. Today sees the death of the bid by the Harper Tories to reopen the debate about gay marriage. Parliament voted the motion down 175 to 123. For more information check out this CBC article.

I think we just made Stephen Harper our bitch ladies and gents.

And that would be almost all...

It is finally done. I finished my last lecture today. It was innocuous enough Org A 441 Business strategy. I didn’t get much out of the class all semester and today was no different. The prof was kind enough to mention to the whole class that after 7 years I was finishing school. He made sure to emphasise the SEVEN YEARS part and neglected to mention that I managed to get two degrees in that time. I would have corrected him but honestly what do I care what my class mates think plus it got a good laugh out of the class.

Yesterday I had a great time at school. Erica and I basically laughed our asses off through three hours of presentations in out alternative dispute resolution class. It wasn’t the presentations that were funny (in fact they were painful) but the fact that we were just in general acting like we were 12 years old and freaking out our fellow group members. She tried to coerce me into doing something crazy and random during my last presentation like blatantly pick my nose or play with my nipples. I was leaning more towards having an epileptic attack or slurring as if I was drunk (lord knows I know how do that). The pot head who wrote that literary masterpiece I posted on Sunday also had a five minute presentation. He rambled on for the whole time about baby boomers even though the presentation was about the most valuable thing we learned about alternative dispute resolution in the class. Baby boomers were never mentioned at any point in the curriculum. The three Profs in the class spent the whole time looking confusedly at each other while he was presenting. It is nice to know that my class wasn’t the only one he was fucking up in. Do drugs in moderation kids!!

We sent the pot head a letter about his shitty performance and to our surprise he actually emailed us back with a coherent message. I haven’t decided what my reply is going to be. Most likely a giant fuck you. After class yesterday Dave Tim and I went to the pub to watch the Oilers whup the Canuks. We were all in the same group and all graduating this semester so we figured celebratory beers were in order. Beer always seems better when your team is winning.

It is really weird to think I am actually done and that I won’t be sitting though anymore painful Finance lectures. I am ready to move on but I admit I will miss it. I am in RATT right now typing this enjoying a victory pint of strongbow and a typically sub par chicken Cesar pita.

So how high was he when he wrote this?

One of the things I won't be missing when I am done school is incompetent, pot head group members. We have a paper due tomorrow about the HP scandal for my business ethics class.
This is what one guy just handed in (2 days late) for his part about the affected parties. I have not edited any part of this clusterfuck of a paper. Enjoy! My comments are in brackets and italics and purple.

The affected parties

Obviously Dunn is kicking herself for assuming that the ethics surrounding privacy in this case were acceptable. But under the advice of her ethical advisor, whom is also facing an investigation, as well as herself being bound and determined to plug the information outflow from her own board, she may have thought the benefits would exceed any repercussions…..she thought wrong. Oh, yeah, she’s battling cancer too.

Wrong, and according to California ?? investigators??????, “collosally stupid”. But in today’s high-flying world of computers, these competitors are fighting tooth and nail to come up with the next new thing that everybody needs. If board members are leaking even the slightest hint of an upcoming project or deal, the repercussions could be colossal, financial losses, as well as loosing trust from other possible partnering companies. Speaking of which, if you were having your morning coffee and came across an article describing what you thought were confidential discussions with another organization, you would have reason to be concerned, if not avoid any further business with such a company. Although the company seems to be holding strong, there is a lot more to unfold in this case, a lot more newscasts concerning the scandal…..we just have to wait and see if HP can turn this around and uphold their current share of the market.

Keyworth—the old leaker

(this guy was found to be the source of a leak in the HP boardroom what a comic genius)

Leave it up to the old guy to forget to keep his trap shut…..

After being astounded at the efforts put forth to find out something he would have simply stated if questioned, I doubt that Keyworth would be interested in sticking around. But why not make things as difficult as possible and stand up for your rights, and your position. He knew that he wouldn’t be re-elected now, so why not!

He may have some trouble finding further employment, but he definitely didn’t come out as the bad guy in the end, especially being the longest serving member of the board.

Shareholders of HP are likely happy with their investments, but would get as much badgering and questioning as current employees would. There could be large financial repercussions on the way, as well as press (good or bad), but if the same kind of wealth is backing HP as Perkins or Larry Babbio, president of Verizon who stood up for Keyworth and the protection of personal phone records in general, they are probably not struggling financially and aren’t sweating a lot. As for the average investors, well, stay tuned!

Perkins: When a centi-millionaire and venture capitalist like Perkins resigns from a board position, people want to know why, especially company lawyers with the SEC on the other line awaiting reasoning behind the departure.

PEkins farts gold.
( I assume this is supposed to read perkins farts gold. What that has to do with anything is beyond me however I am certain that his drug addled brain found the word fart hilarious. )

Ethics officer/ Investigators: They simply tried to dance around privacy issues that they should have not been testing, and they got burned. Their support and/or actions are really the most astounding part of the ordeal, other then Dunn not further questioning the processes and what exactly was occurring (WOW what an idiot)

It’s a great idea to have the media on your side. But dragging well-established writers of reputable, popular publications such as Wall Street Journal into such a mess is not a strategic move that would reap many positive benefits…at all. But the aggressiveness they were going after these people was astounding; they even tried mock emails inviting hungry columnists of a “distraught” employee wanting to spread some info.

The computer guy/ distributors – Computer illiterate moms’ and dads’ across the globe rely on their office’s computer guy for advice all the time. If said computer guy has a funny feeling regarding the ethical wrong-doings surrounding HP, then maybe he gloats about the latest competitor’s product instead of HP. Then un-educated word of mouth takes over at coffee time, and 7 minutes later they’re the bad guys across the globe.

Current employees: employees of HP will likely be updated on their ethics codes around their many offices, but other than that, they (and it just stops right there you can almost tell he got distracted by something sparkly)

Board members: Someone accidentally letting some impertinent- or at least thought to be important and next thing you know someone has stole your phone records. Not everyday does one find themselves in a pre-texting scandal, but every board member was a target. Think of the resources tied into examining everyone’s calls from every phone they could track, all done in a “hush-hush” manner behind their backs. They will certainly need some strong leadership to restore faith at the upper levels of this organization.

The new leader has a lot on his plate, good luck buddy. (good luck indeed, what a douchebag)

Carly Fiorini: (it is actually Fiorina how he could not know this blows my mind)

The book tour couldn’t reap any better rewards from keeping HP in the papers, especially if they mention the previous leader. From her accomplishments consisting of the Compaq/HP merger to her exit from HP, read all about it for only 19.99 at your local bookstore!

All in all, there could be more parties uncovered at time progresses. Maybe this is more common than we think. (truer words have never been spoken man am I glad I am done with these types of people)

The list of last times

It is December I officially have 4 classes left. Two on Monday and two on Tuesday.
I can not believe how fast things are ending.

Pretty much since my seven year university career began a whole bunch of us have been meeting regularly on Fridays first at the Powerplant and then at RATT on campus for beers and bull-shiting. Now that I am graduating as the last of the original crew I am not so sure friday's at the RATT are going to be happening that much anymore. I am sure we will find a new place and things to do but is still kind of sad to kind of see the end of a good thing.

Today I go to my last official Friday at RATT. Next week is my official last presentation and papers. On the 15th are my last hand in exams.
Then I am no longer a student.
What I am after that is yet to be seen...
