Battlestar Gallactica made me its manbitch

I finally got around to watching Battlestar Gallactica's season finale last night. All I can say is that it was brilliant. Now i know a lot of people have been knocking season three as a disappointment and while there were a few off episodes this year I think fans are being far to harsh.

The writers are pretty ballsey and take risks. Not all of those risks are going to pan out the way they wanted them too. As such some episodes come off as gimmicky.

That being said there were episodes that were by far the best in the series history. The finale was definitely a different beast than last years cliffhanger extravaganza. This was much more twisted, elegant and artistic. Weaving the Bob Dylan song in was a master stroke.
Here are a summary of my thoughts:
- It was obvious that Kara did not die I knew they would never kill her off. No she is not a cylon. But my question is what Apollo saw really her or is she in his head like six and gauis?
- I am not convinced that the 4 that were hearing the music are Clyons I think they are miss-interpreting the signals they are getting. I think this is going to be a classic bait and switch situation. Ill have to review the Bob Dylan lyrics first though to decided. Odds are if they are Cylons they are from the last cycle of war and reunification.
- Highlight for me was Giaus calling Gaida butterfingers....classic!
- Have to wait till January 8th!?!?!?! WTF how unfair is that. Its no wonder the show is losing fans with such a random release schedule.

I am I gigantic nerd.

Condo Renovation day 12-14 Update!

Things seemingly have been moving at a snails pace so I haven't been updating as much as I should. Here is a compilation video of the last few days.

Condo Renovation day 13

I spent most of yesterday night scraping linoleum off the bathroom and kitchen floor. It has become apparent that my timeline is rapidly falling apart. This is mostly due to the mold in the bathroom and the fact that my flooring people have not started yet (they were supposed to start 2 days ago). It looks like the bathroom is going to take at least 3 days to finish and flooring maybe longer at this rate.

It does not look like I will be moving in this weekend as I had hoped. This whole process is so emotionally draining. I just want it done.

She is leaving on a jet plane

This post is to wish Vanessa many wonderful travels in her new home of Ireland. As most of you know Nessa is my brothers longtime girlfriend who has been living with us for the last three years. I think of her as my roomate/sister in-law/gay bar dancing buddy.

She is moving to Ireland for the next 10 months to see what Europe has to offer. I will miss her a lot. Things just wont be the same with her gone.

Spring is a time of change though (we had our first real rain-storm today!!. I am really proud of her and what she is doing.
Bon voyage dude!

Condo renovations day 9-10: Attack of the mold

Bathroom demolition began yesterday. I started by chiseling off the god awful old tile. That was pretty fun but uneventful. However as I got closer to the tap it seemed like the drywall underneath was getting softer and softer. By the time i got to the tap and removed the last tiles it became apparent that it was filled with mold. I sprayed everything down with a disinfectant and proceeded to cut away the large section of drywall that was affected.

I then started to scrape off the old mortar from the wall. If that job isn't total bitch work I don't know what is. My hands and forearms are sooo sore today. If i had to remove tile everyday after a while I would end up looking like Popeye sans squinty eye (I hope). It turns out that most of that work was for nothing as my Dad thinks we will have to remove all the drywall which for some reason was installed in two layers around the bathroom.

Here is a video of yesterdays progress:

Ryan came in and painted his room. The colours he choose were very nice. I kind of wish I had used them all over.

The flooring guy is supposed to be in today but I have not heard from him. I am begining to stress a bit more.

Condo Renovation day 7: the death of the Hummmmm

The plumber came and in about 3 seconds managed to fix the humm that has been driving us nuts since Saturday. Apparently it was a broken fan or something like that.

I am very very happy about this.

I figure since it has been a week since getting this place I should go back and see how close renovations are going to my schedule posted here.

Thursday - Get the keys, go for Dim Sum with Tim for lunch, work off the deep fried shrimp by tearing out the carpets and doing some exploratory tests for wall insulation. Clean the critical areas of the bathroom and kitchen. Dim sum was great carpets torn out things got clean

Friday- Finish tearing out flooring and closet doors. Wait for hardwood to arrive. If need be rent insulation blower and fill walls with insulation that need them. Start patching walls and painting trim. Get tempted by Frank to go to his place and loose at poker. Finished carpets ,walls were insulated were done the night before, patching and painting not started. Trash removal was the big job today as was tearing out the closet doors ect.

Saturday- Finish wall patching and sanding. Start painting walls. Get tempted by everyone to go out for St. Patric's day. Hah none of the above happened with the exception of being tempted.

Sunday- Last coats of paint. Shop for closet stuff (most likely from Ikea). Start sub-floor if needed. Painting is getting close but delays have caused my room and the bathroom to not be done plus we now have to paint the ceiling. No Ikea and the subfloor hasn't been touched.

Monday- Go get my Grad photos done (not condo related but i need the reminder). Depending on if my tile comes in we will start tearing out the old bathroom tile if not we will be working on replacing light fixtures in the Kitchen. Grad photos turned out great finished 95% of the painting, Started work on the bathroom. The plus side is the kitchen is basically done

Tuesday - Prep for the flooring to go in or finish bathroom tile. Small projects end up taking the whole day.

Wednesday - Couches arrive!! And they are awesome!

Thursday- Window treatments.

Friday- Go for a much deserved beer.

Saturday & Sunday- Finish packing up all of my stuff at my parents

Monday to Wednesday- Nick arrives to do the floor. I start moving stuff in and unpacking.

Thursday to Saturday - Finish moving and unpacking then Party.

Sooooo I guess I am a little off schedule but that is to be expected.

Condo renovation day six!

The video says it all:

The places life takes you

Today while doing some troubleshooting on some program code I ended up learning about the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Weeiiiiird.

**** Update****
I just learned how to properly roll up a power cord. Hold the one end while flipping the other one around and gently twisting it so that when you need it it rolls right out.
It has been such an odd day!

What did you learn today?

And on the 5th day they rested

I had a really awesome day yesterday. Got into work to find a box of Lindor Lindt hazelnut chocolates on my desk. If there is any way to start the day that is better than good chocolate it probably involves nudity and thrusting.

I went and got my Grad photos taken. Ran into my ex Phil. I kind of expected to run into him there considering that is where he works but i think i caught him off guard. Said hello and we had a semi-awkward catch up chat. We haven't really talked in in the past year or so. It is wierd how you can spend two years of your life with someone and then can't seem to talk to them after. It was good to see him though. One of the reasons he dumped me was he said I had no direction in my life or plan (which is totally untrue). Here i am a year and a half later and I have my own Condo and am Managing my own department. Kinda made me feel good to prove him wrong as petty as that sounds.

Here is my grad photo, which one do you all like? Post your comments to let me know!

I also recived a new toy at work. Infrant technologies ReadyNAS NV+ Network attached storage device. We intend on using this as our main source of data backups. As of right now I could not be more pleased with the device. It is the size of a small toaster and looks really slick in our server room the setup wizard is easy to follow and the device comes with a ton of cool options. I can't even tell you how pleased I am with it so far.

The only two areas I would suggest improvement in is the inclusion of LDAP support and a better backup and restore function.

The condo is going ok. We didn't really do much work on it yesterday as it was a much needed day off from renovations (though my Dad did so some work on the roof). the humming sound is still there and we can't figure out why. I also met my neighbors upstairs. They are the only original owners left in the complex. The bought when the building was built in 1977. Since then not a single thing has changed in there apartment. It was like walking into a time warp. Orange shag carpet, fake brick fireplace, groovy wall paper, all of it in such immaculate condition i thought it was new. I totally loved it!!!

All in all a really good day.

Condo renovation day four (a day late)

Sorry for the delay, you tube was not allowing me to upload videos!

There is a mysterious hummmm coming from the wall between my closet and my bathroom. It is bothering the unit above me we have checked it out and have no idea what could be causing it. I am stressed.

I honestly don't know how shows like trading spaces and How not to decorate do it without becoming totally miserable. We have a had a huge crew of friends and family working every day and i am still exhausted.

I think this video says it all:

Renovation day three!

Things have happened recently that make all the minor things like paint and lighting seem less critical. It is so easy to get wrapped up in all this materialistic stuff.

Still there is work to be done walls to paint and decisions to be made. We made tons of progress today the whole team seems to be getting tired out. I can't say that i blame them. This is why renovation shows have huge crews that work behind the scenes to get things done in the time required. Here is a video diary of day three and some select photos:

Condo renovation day two!

Day two was a mixed bag of activity. I am so sore right now and even after an extra long shower I don't feel clean. Went over early this morning with Vanessa and Justin and worked our asses off getting rid of the horrific sunshine cealing that was in the kitchen. It hung about 8 inches below the regular roof and made the whole room seem claustrophobic. The smell that was trapped in the yellowed panels was best described as stale wet fart enjoy that thought for a while....

The whole kitchen looks a million times bigger and brighter now that it is gone. We spent the rest of the morning getting a whole bunch of little things done.

Then we tackled the job i had been dreading the most removing the last of the rug in the bedroom. It was by far in the roughest shape and smelled indescribably awful. Check out the stains below to see what i am talking about. We actually had to take breaks between ripping out strips to get fresh air.

After that joy others started to arrive and things really started to pick up. My bamboo flooring arrived. This is what 2700 dollars worth of bamboo looks like:

Lucas arrived and we loaded his truck up with the a bunch or the old carpet. We began painting. The tan colour i thought i was getting turned out to be a bright yellow. An emergency trip to Home depot later and it didn't seem to be any better. Oh well its not that bad I suppose.

Lots of progress and I hope that tomorrow when i walk in it won't stink!!

Condo renovation day one!

Things did not exactly go as planned today. I was late getting the keys for the place due to the insane parking situation in Edmonton's downtown.

We get to the place and it has not been cleaned at all. It was like someone sprayed pine sol at the door and then left. Now normally that would not be a big deal but the previous owner had low mobility and the place was pretty disgusting. Here is a video tour of the place. Consider this a Before the renovations post.

Please ignore my dorky voice lol. Here are some pics as well:

Unlocking the door for the first time.My domain pink carpet and all

Vanessa with the disgusting pink carpet, if you look close you can see the brown discoloration. We decided we were calling that particular colour of brownish pink "shat-stain" If you pronounce it really fast as all one word it almost sounds French. Did i mention there were a lot of fumes in the condo?Speaking of fumes this is Vanessa pretending to smoke up in my gigantic storage room.
Cheers
This is a hot look for me :PAnd this is what my brother helped with while he was there. Boy that pizza eating is hard work

Offically a homeowner: Day one of renovations

I slept like a baby last night until about 4:30 am when I woke up ready to get going. ( am soo sexcited i can't focus on work. I will be posting the video tour and before pictures tonight!!

My adventures in the closet: Hardware shopping with Dad

Often people ask me why I don't just come out to my parents. Today's shopping trip with my Dad is the perfect example as to why that is not a good idea.

Shopping was uneventful for the most part we got along great (which is surprising because we rarely have hung out since the incident a while ago). He suggested i get a woman to do the cooking so I wouldn't have to. I rolled my eyes for the most part.

The icing on the cake came after we picked up beer for the people working with me on the condo. As we pulled up i heard this scraping sound from the front of his car. This is the conversation that follows.

Me: "What was that sound?"
Dad: "Oh that was some fairy I ran over today. The fag has been clinging to my grill all day. Making quite a racket"
Me:".............."

Class ladies and gentlemen nothing but class.

OOOOO me want!!

I apologize for another brief post. Things are going to get very busy here very soon. I have a ton of last min things to get done before the renovation onslaught tomorrow.

I saw this little guywhile browsing around last night isnt he the cutest thing ever!!?!? I want one!!
Now if only we had a super sweet rotofugi store in Edmonton!!

Good Vibrations

I haven't smiled this much in a long time!
Good things are happening!

Its really happening

In two days I will officially be the owner of a lovely little two bedroom condo in the heart of oliver in downtown Edmonton. Things are really progressing along well.

My flooring is ordered and should be here by Friday, the tile has not been ordered but I do know the kind I want, I am just waiting for people to get back to me, my couches and tables come next week at the same time as my buddy Nick is coming to install the hardwood and the tile.

Here is the plan as things stand:
Thursday - Get the keys, go for Dim Sum with Tim for lunch, work off the deep fried shrimp by tearing out the carpets and doing some exploratory tests for wall insulation. Clean the critical areas of the bathroom and kitchen.

Friday- Finish tearing out flooring and closet doors. Wait for hardwood to arrive. If need be rent insulation blower and fill walls with insulation that need them. Start patching walls and painting trim. Get tempted by Frank to go to his place and loose at poker.

Saturday- Finish wall patching and sanding. Start painting walls. Get tempted by everyone to go out for St. Patric's day.

Sunday- Last coats of paint. Shop for closet stuff (most likely from Ikea). Start sub-floor if needed.

Monday- Go get my Grad photos done (not condo related but i need the reminder). Depending on if my tile comes in we will start tearing out the old bathroom tile if not we will be working on replacing light fixtures in the Kitchen.

Tuesday - Prep for the flooring to go in or finish bathroom tile

Wednesday - Couches arrive!!

We will see how well this schedule fits with what actually happens. I am getting really excited. Change is in the air and i can feel it. It is going to be a good spring!!

Backup software for external hardrives review

I have been testing out a few different external hardrives for backup purposes at my work.
First up was the western digital My Book 120 gig essential edition. It installs seamlessly but wait where is the backups software that tigerdirect.ca said was included?
Oh it's only available on the premium edition.... thanks tigerdirect, assholes!
Attempts to use the drive to back-up the laptop are foiled as acronis true disk-image (horrible software but better than norton ghost) wont recognize the disk due to its formating. I give up on hopes of using this as a regular automated backup disk for now until i find a software program that can work with the disk efficiently.

Next up the super slick and portable western digital Passport 120 gig drive. First of all I have to say it is incredibly well designed light and the fact that it does not need a power plug in is totally sweet (and worth the extra money). I plugged it into my own laptop, a two year old averatec 3200 that is slow and in much need of a re-installation (hence my need to back things up). The backup program updates after a quick prompt. Soon I am setting up a profile and password. The software is pretty slick but seems to be eating up all of my resources. I pretty much want to back up my whole disk but that doesn't seem to be in the options. I go into the advance options and try and select the whole c-drive. The software promptly hangs and i have to shut it down manually.

Eventually i get to to work by selecting the individual folders i need backed up. The backing up process takes all night. The drive doesn't even get warm to the touch even at the end of the marathon backup process. The length of time may be due to my laptop being total garbage.

Next up i try another passport on a dell inspirion laptop. The thing is backed up and synchronized in under 4 hours. About 40 gigs worth of data. I am pleased.

Yet another passport on a dell desktop. The updated backup software does not seem to work on this machine (probably because this desktop's xp install has not been updated due to software conflicts). The older version of the software runs ok however. This time the backup process takes about 5 hours.

The next one is seagate's external hardrive. The software is far less slick looking than WD's but a hell of a lot more efficient (12 gigs in under an hour). The only downside is that the software has to be installed separately from a cd (thats soo old school).

At almost 100 dollars cheaper the seagate is the clear winner for usability. The western digital one while far more portable and cooler falls prey to buggy software.

300: the glorious debut of the leather speedo

I just got back from 300. It was big it was loud and dare I say epic. It was cheesy, it was gruesome and ultimately it totally rocked.

I can't even say how many times I had to sit back in awe at how fucking cool things were. I felt like I was 12 again.

Things to note about 300:
- Don't go to see if your inner child is dead, you probably will miss the point
- It must be very cold in Sparta as everyone's (well mostly the women) have gigantic pinky sized nipples
- Spartans can kick your ass wearing nothing but a leather speedo
- Don't go to see 300 if you are male and have any sort of body issues, you WILL feel fat and you will feel the urge to go do a million sit ups
- Apparently the guy that does the armor for the greeks is also a kinky sex leather fiend as most of them were wearing leather harnesses

Now i am off to go do sit ups

Thats one memory lane that I am still wary of

Well packing up all of my stuff has continued to turn up some interesting artifacts from my past. There really is nothing better than throwing away a bunch of stuff that you really don't need anymore (well actually there are a lot of things better than that but I am talking in the realm of packing and organizing).

Specifically a note from this guy. Often in the last year or so I have wondered where his animosity towards me was coming from. A year ago at Christmas he sent me a rather heartfelt note. I basically avoided it. I didn't really say much about it partially because I didn't know what to say and partially because there was too much to say.

Re-reading the letter last night i realize now that my lack of response was not just a bit of a slap in the face but it must have seemed more than a little malicious on my part. Reading it now with the emotional distance that I have established I really do feel bad for not responding in some way.

All this time I thought he was being childish, I never thought to consider that there might have been valid reason for his attitude. Lesson learned I guess, I can't change the past and at this point I don't think I would want to anyway.

Funny how things turn out isn't it?

And somehow I don't feel any different

The lawyers went well, not half as scary as i thought they would be. I have never spent so much money so quickly before and with so little buyers remorse. Now all i can do is wait for my keys.

This condo has always seemed so far away and now in 7 days i will actually have it. I guess I am supposed to feel burdened or older or something, but really I don't I feel like a weight is being lifted from my shoulders; this is going to be great!

I started to pack up my meager possessions last night, mostly just the stuff i know i wont need for the next month or so. I went through my closet and found a whole bunch of stuff from my exes. I am thinking of donating the stuffed animals and stuff to a children's charity. I t was a fun little trip down memory lane and all but I just don't think I need them around, plus I know they could bring a lot of joy to some kids out there. I guess the whole experience was a little melancholy, good to relive the good stuff and the bad stuff too.

I am a little pissed off though as it seems I have lost my camera tripod which i need to take the before and after picture for the condo. I can't seem to find it anywhere.

In the reception area at work today a nice elderly lady asked me how old I was and informed me that I was far too young to be working in an office. I explained to her that I was 24 and she said that I looked like a very young and healthy 24. I know she was like 65 but still it is nice to get a compliment once in a while. Yay me.

Bring on the lawyers

It is amazing what a few days will do. Other than going shopping for stuff it has been kind of hard to grasp the fact that in 8 days I will acctually own property. I am going today to the lawyers to finalize the deal and transfer the downpayment. Needless to say I am a little stressed. I am so excited that this is all finnaly happening!!!

An inauspicious start

I think I am catching a cold.
I got a $130.00 speeding ticket this morning on the way to work. I really don't have the room in my budget this month to pay it. The even more tragic part is the officer i got was ugly and the hot one was waaay up at the front of the line with the other 8 vehicles they nailed.
I hope this week gets better.

New Camera !!!!

As some of you may know my old cam was ruined a couple of weeks ago due to a cracked lcd screen.

Yesterday I received my new Panasonic DMC-lz5. So far it is great. Here are some pics from last nights festivities. We went to Julios Barrio, the newfie bar and then to Orgiginal Joe's to meet Evelyn's super cute new Boyfriend Allan.

Friday, March 02, 2007

That was tragic

Tim is back in town for the weekend. He called me up yesterday with tickets to the oilers game. I never turn down free tickets so we went and watched the oilers get trounced by the wild. It is funny they said that the place was sold out but looking at the stands there couldn't have been more than 14000 people there.

The last time I was in that place where the atmosphere was so dead was in the mid 90's when the oilers were attracting 12000 a game on average. It was so quiet in that place for most of the game you could have heard the people in the next section over talking.

My unlikely prediction: the oilers do not score another goal for the rest of the season.

Let the countdown begin, so sexcited!

In 14 days I will be the proud owner of this condo.

There is still a ton of stuff to do. I have to get insurance, pack, buy paint; all sorts of stuff is going to be happening the next few weeks.

I just hope my new digital camera arrives before I move in so I can document the renovations for everyone.

Mark this down ladies and gentlemen as I am officially giddy like a school girl.
