Good bye 00's you were great

The decade was filled with change for me. I went from a closeted 17 yr old high-school student to an active employed educated guy in a fantastic relationship. Thank you everyone who made this last decade so awesome.

I can't even fathom what the next 10 years will bring.

Best wishes to all of my readers i hope your new year is fantastic!

Music for wrapping

Greg's new fav song is by a local edmonton band. Cocaine Trade by Christian Hansen and the Autistics. I have been humming it to myself all day enjoy. Hilarious lyrics.

Shopping in a winter wonderland

I have been laying low the last few days enjoying my time off. I have been sleeping in enjoying special shortbread cookies and basically being an unproductive member of society.

It has been glorious.

My brain feels like it is resetting. Almost feeling normal again. The best part is work has not called me once this week.

I did some last min running around today. I had to finish up presents for three people and pick up some more wrapping paper. The stores were insane and the traffic was absurd however people seemed to be in good spirits. I am officially done all of my shopping.

The next few days are going to be fairly insane. I have my family dinner tomorrow and then Greg's family on x-mas day in red deer then Ryan and Jim are crashing here for a few days of debauchery.

I know posting will be light over the next few days so I wanted to take this chance to wish all of my readers a very merry holiday season. Take some time and let the people you care about know how much you mean to them.

Best wishes to all of you!

Edmonton Police service: A cuture of entitlement & Fear?

You know I have had my issues with the way EPS is run internally. From my sources and personal experiences I do believe that the core of the EPS culture there is something very wrong. It is little wonder we solve fewer crimes here than anywhere else in Alberta when supposedly responsible individuals are forced off the force due to fear of repercussions internally from fellow officers.

Please read the whole article on the CBC site. It is really fascinating stuff.

With great power comes great responsibility and an expectation of conduct. I think there are large swaths of the Edmonton police service that are bereft of this concept.

Edmonton city council makes the right choice on the lrt

I am super happy to say that the Edmonton city council chose the stony plain 104 street route to the west end.

This was a ballsy decision that will transform the way people get to work in this city. Score one for public transport!

I need an outlet

So the fella is being a condescending douche tonight. He knows i can not NOT talk to him and he is using that against me.

However there is a super hot cub named paul bradford on the newest episode of ghost hunters International. I shall stare at him to help prevent my urge to strangle the fella. His accent is like honey chocolate sex.
The pics are terrible but they are all that i can find.

they are so much work.

Gotta be done

I went to the dentist today. I am still amazed that I can walk into a dentist office after my wisdom teeth (and the fillings before that and the filling before that) went so poorly. Every time i am in the chair it is a battle to stop myself from freaking out.

It was so queer though the whole experience. It has been about 18 months since my last visit and every person I came into contact with that worked for the clinic managed to slip that fact in.

Oh it has been so long since we have seen you

Wow it has been a while since I did a check up with you,

It was like i was dealing with scientologists or some other cult.
I am surprised they didn't hug me and feed me a low nutrient diet. In fact come to think of it I had not eaten before going there.
I HATE anyone that works in a dentist office. You know in france they have public coverage for dental. My visit today would have cost 15 dollars versus 220 for a standard cleaning.

Take me to miami

Ok so yes I have bitched about the cold a lot as of late. However when you live in the coldest place in North America I think it's allowed.

Here is a quote from the Edmonton journal today.

Environment Canada recorded a frigid -46.1 C, or -58.4 C with wind chill, at the Edmonton International Airport at 5 a.m

Mouthwash for your brain

We finally got around to watching all of our tv shows it is minus 25 right now without the wind chill so there is not much else to do that doesn't involve freezing ones nuts off.

Glee managed to wipe away all the negative vibes I built up this week. Yes it needed more Kurt but overall it was pitch perfect.

30 Rock made me laugh super hard Cheyenne Jackson is so brilliant. When he discovered sarcasm I died.

Top Chef. Kevin deserved it i disliked douchey brother all year but he still managed to pull it off.

Office was so so.

Dollhouse (we only saw the first hour) Honestly this should have been the pilot episode. I loved so much of it. The twists were great the acting was not so terrible.

Amazing race finale wrapup

Well Sunday was the amazing race finale. I was surprisingly not invested in it. I was glad that barbie and ken won they kicked ass the whole race. The problem I have with the race is the last 4 or so episodes are never all that good. It was getting hard too root for any of the teams towards the end this season because they were all so grating. Isn't the point of the show to make you want to cheer for someone. After Matt and Gary left the show there really wasn't a likable team left. Granted those two both seemed like actually decent people.

My only hope watching it was the Brian and Ericka would lose. This is not because she was exactly how i would imagine a high maintenance beauty queen to be like aka B-I-T-C-H but because they had to be the luckiest team in amazing race history. How they made it to the final while other more deserving teams did not totally amazes me. Also maybe this is a cultural thing that I am totally missing being Canadian but are interracial marriages still a big deal in the states?? Seriously??

Also I would like to note that if you are one of the many guys and gals searching for Matt Tomljenovich shirtless or wondering if he is gay (these are by far the two most searched terms that lead people here) Here are some answers.

1. Matt Tomljenovich is Not gay. Yes he is a super fucking hot cub. Buut his girlfriend (or someone claiming to be his girlfriend) stated such on my previous post about him that he is very much straight. I have no reason to believe otherwise especially after the hot chick in the sauna. So yes hot, tattooed, outdoorsy, sweetheart aaaand gay was too much to ask for. You will just have to settle for this eye candy i put together.

2. Here are some of Matt shirtless because I know a ton of you guys and girls are lookin for it.

Poisoning Albertans so that big oil can profit

Last night the Edmonton Journal posted a well timed study on the effect the oil sands are having on the Athabasca river. Basically it is the equivalent of a perpetual oil spill that happens year round 24/7. The report states that the presence of toxic chemicals in the river and surrounding watershed are up to 50 times higher downstream of the oilsands.

The Alberta government unsurprisingly does not think this is a problem. That is because big oil has owned this government for decades. I wonder how the conservatives they would feel if they were drinking that water every day.

It is times like this I get really upset with politics in general. There is no accountability anymore. The big corporations and outside interests will get the people elected who will serve the best interests of their bottom line. So much for government of the people, by the people, for the people. I hate to break it to anyone but government like this perished from the earth many years ago.

Welcome to my nightmare

It is hard being an environmentalist in Alberta. In fact i would say it is far easier to be gay than eco -friendly. Saying you disagree with the incredibly wasteful oil sands development in favor of more renewable resources is like walking into a man's house and stealing his paycheck and punching his wife in the face and then scratching the hood of his ridiculous suv.

Its a big oil economy here and millions are spent by companies to spread propaganda to there own workers to ensure there is enough fear to prevent any real slowdown in development.

It makes me feel a little better that the world is finally starting to focus on what a backwards and damaging program the athabasca oilsands are.

Snowed in

The fella and I had planned to go do a good chunk of our christmas shopping today and then a wine and cheese tasting tonight. Unfortunately we are experiencing a blizzard that meteorologists say could drop up to 30 cm of snow in some places. We have already seen about 15 cm with drifting being a major problem.

The police have requested that no one not travel any of the roads unless for emergency. All we can hear outside is the constant beeps of the snow plows and the sirens from the police cars. Its like nuclear winter has set in. Makes me think I should move to a warmer climate. So those of you in warmer places go out and enjoy yourself for me tonight we are going to stay in and find ways to pass the time ;)

Love in the 21st Century

Last night before bed the fella and I were talking. Well mostly I was talking. Here is a rough transcript.

Me: Randomly discussing the merits of getting another cat to keep his cat amused while we are at work.

The fella: Generally grunting and being a sarcastic smart ass.

Me: Well I guess I will stop talking then.

The fella: Good it is after 12:30 you shouldn't be talking anyway.

Me: But I have all of these thoughts and feelings I need to share with you.

The fella: Good you can blog about them and then I can read them at my convenience.

Me: Fine I am going to blog about this and you are going to come off sounding like a jerk.

The fella: Your still talking.

End scene.

Isn't love grand. It was bad enough earlier this week we decided to sync our calendars. Shared calendars are a big step but I think I am ready for it.

Meet and Greet With Buck Angel: Edmonton Exposure Fest 2009

Sorry for the delay in posting this. Doug was kind enough to take some pictures of the night and I wanted to include them in the post.

The hi-light of Edmonton's queer culture festival this year was by far the career retrospective presentation and meet and greet with Buck Angel. Buck's story has fascinated me for years. I first learned about him in my sociology of gender class waaay back in 2000. Back then it blew my mind that there could be this butch guy who just happens to have a pussy. I was still very much a sheltered suburban kid with no real understanding of gender identity rolls.

The night included a documentary by Buck featuring his best clips from his porn movies interspersed with interviews and news items. It was at times a bit shocking for me but overall really insightful and funny. Buck did a Q & A after which was even better. The night ended at boots where Buck did the meet and greet and I was lucky enough to get a pic with him.

Who would have thought in Edmonton of all places. Thanks to the exposure festival for running such a fantastic set of shows this year!

Mother effin tooth

My wisdom tooth has started to act up. Yesterday it started to hurt. Today it is like fucking biting down on a knife.

The surgery for removal is going to cost way too much at this point especially so close to christmas. I am screwed. I am going to blast the heck out of it with peroxide and listerine and hopefully it will stop fucking bothering me for a few months.

Spreading the love

Hey All,
I have updated my blogroll on the right hand side of the page. Removed some dead sites and included some new ones that I have been following. As an additional note feel free to check out my buddy Petie's blog that he just started. He has been commenting on this here web thingy for years now and he makes a fucking fantastic plate of nachos.

Makeover makeover, Makeover!

I am mildly embarrassed to admit it but i am a fan of the ghost hunters tv program. Yes I know it is totally ridiculous about 70% of the time but that 30% of what they do find can be kinda cool.

The biggest problem I have with the show is that all of the guys dress totally douchebaggy. Ill fitting clothes terrible haircuts and way too much hair gel. This seems to be be much worse in the spin off Ghost Hunters International (except for the Irish dude).

If your going to be on an internationally syndicated TV show please at least wear some jeans that fit and for gods sakes stop using dippity doo hair gel. You are not in grade 8 anymore. I want to go all what not to wear on all the guys and give them a proper makeover.

There petty rant of the day over.

If only i was this smart and funny

The mocking of twilight continues.

Need to wash that taste out of my brain

Out of morbid curiosity I downloaded a cam of New moon this weekend. I have to say I am shocked and disappointed that it made so much money. After seeing the train wreck that was twilight I promised myself not a dime of my money would ever touch the stephanie meyer franchise.

It really is apparent that the film is a fail on every level. Normally I could blame the actors or the director for lack of chemistry and poor plotting but i think the problem comes down to the source material. The motivations for the characters are never really fleshed out and the actions they take seem more a feature of "we need to drag this out" rather than the actions of a fully realized character. These people have as much emotional depth as the smurfs (and that is being generous).

For the life of me I can not find one reason why any of them in the love triangle would be interested in the other. It all seems far too forced for my taste. Is it just me but does Robert Patinnson look like a constipated frankenstine monster and not a vampire??

To give my brain a bit of a reboot I watched Children of Men last night. What a fantastic movie. Even the tertiary characters have more depth than the leads of new moon.

The Vagaries of the internets

Life has slowly been getting back to normal for me. Let me just say to anyone expecting a smooth transition from leopard server to snow leopard server is in for a few unfortunate surprises and some long nights.

I took friday off for some much needed R&R. Work still managed to phone me for bullshit emergency stuff but I managed to keep it to a minimum. I went to the straight strippers that night as a favour to a buddy who went with us to the Buck Angel career retrospective the week before. I think its odd that my last two fridays have centred around vag. The peelers were depressing and we didn't stay long (why does one hour there feel like 8???). Though the one that did the reverse shimmy up the pole using only her legs to lady gaga's bad romance totally won my respect and kudos.

So thanks to Gauche - O Poeta Bêbado for pointing out something that is totally bizarre yet sort of flattering. If you google image search hot cub my picture shows up on page two. How strange is that?? Its odd how the search algorithm decided on my humble blog for such a high ranking.

I better work it while it lasts and post some semi scandalous pics.

Self sustaining communities: Hakka Circular Houses

It is amazing the tools and solutions cultures come up with. The tools for sustainable development exist and have been around for hundreds of years we just need to get out of our north american superiority bubble to take advantage of it. Fascinating I would to visit one.

Love the whole concept of a self sustaining apartment complex. Check out the gallery here and more about the Hakka people here.

Random Neuron Missfire

It is funny the things that come back to you at random times for no reason at all. I had a memory of a kids show that we watched every day for years that featured sea creature puppets on a blue screen.

I have no idea why it came to my mind. Thank god for google. I doubt this show made it out of canada but you never know so here is a little nostalgia from my childhood. The Waterville Gang

Smacked down by a pig

Its likely I have the swine flu. I refuse to believe that this is the dreaded flu everyone is talking about. Yes it has been a crappy 3 days but this isn't that bad. However if im not starting to feel better tomorrow I shall make my was to one of the insanely overwhelmed medi-clinics to see what they can do.

The fella is starting to come out of it, he is even thinking about going to work tomorrow. He has been so super fantastic the last few days. He bought a tub of chocolate peanut butter icecream which was fucking superb annnd he accompanied me to my work tonight to reset a server that was all wonky.

The plague has struck

The fella and I are both coming down with something. I would like to believe this is the common cold and not the swine flu. I am still in the early stages of fighting it.

The pc's have so badly botching our h1n1 vaccine plans to the point where I believe Health Minister Ron Liepert should be charged with gross negligence. There does not seem to be a lot of options for Albertans who do not want to get sick unless of course you are a member of the Calgary flames.

What really kills me (and may actually kill many) is the Leipert has declared the vaccine program a success.

What outrageous arrogance and incompetence. Does it bother anyone else that as Cracked Crystal Ball II pointed out that Winnipeg had 12 clinics and Calgary only had 4?

Octoberfest: Edmonton 2009

Well we managed to survive the weekend's shenanigans. Octoberfest was fun despite how poorly managed the beer delivery system was. The taps were over pressured and as a result everything that was poured was super foamy. It was a 45 min wait in line to get a jug of beer.

I witnessed terrible crimes against beer in that lineup. They would pour the beer from jug to jug. They would then let the foam settle and start the process all over again in an attempt to get a full one with only a little bit of head. By the time you got your full jug the beer was tragically flat and abused. The whole thing was rather disorganized.

That aside we had a fantastic time. The company was great. I ended up throwing together a lame costume. I went as a virgin (i know unexpected right :P). Which was basically me with a V-card in my pocket. I managed to hold onto that v-card all night!

Next year I want to do something more epic for a costume. It just didn't feel right not being dressed up.

Restoring a mac with Time Machine from a Readynas nv+

We had a macbook pro today that would not boot up. After a quick look at it using the install disk's disk utility it looked like there were some un-solveable disk permission issues in the library most likely due to some sort of software install gone bad.

We store all of our time machine backups on a readynas nv+ which has been a handy tool for us for many applications. I had never restored a system from time machine before so this was an interesting exercise. I found this fantastic tutorial on the readynas support community. The only limitation is that if you follow it when you get to the point to select your readynas share that contains the backup the time machine restore utility can not find it (Snow leopard 10.6.1).

To get around this:
  1. I went into disk utility.
  2. Selected the main HD.
  3. Selected the restore option.
  4. In there you will see a place to select what image you are restoring from. Click on the select or choose option and you will see a finder selection window open up.
  5. From the left hand "Shared" panel find the readynas appliance.
  6. Select your share so that the mounted icon shows up next to it.
  7. Then hit cancel and exit disk utility.
  8. You should return to the time machine restore screen and your backup drive should be displayed on the option list.
After that you are ready to go with your backup.

Pac man never looked so appealing

DVICE just did a rundown on 10 fun retro gaming costumes. The list is soso with one exception. I personally have never been a fan of pac man, however if pac man was as hot as this guy I am sure I would have spent more time working that joystick...

Today is not starting off so well. The fella slept through his alarm only to discover that the hot water had been turned off for the building. Now I am on the condo board and I knew we were replacing the water heaters today. The board president assured us that the water would be on till 9 am when they would get started.

Clearly this was not the case as it was off before 7. She is always doing passive aggressive shit like this. I am not impressed.

So i tried to shower in ice cold water which has left my back all cramped up. I don't even feel clean.

Bleh good start to the day.

I need to get you out of your cave, man

I am totally digging Roisin Murphy. Her disk "overpowered" is rockin my fuzzy butt these days, the more i listen to it the more i love it. It feels like a bit of a disco a bit of grace jones and some kylie/lady gaga. Check out her song primitive. Its sounding great on my recently returned Bose cinemate sound system (which I missed dearly while it was gone to the shop for some warranty work).

webcrimes Case 8: The copycat

It is official Yahoo took down it's geocities sites today meaning that thousands of hideous websites are off the web living on only in our memories and google's cache. Eventually the pain caused by the dancing gifs and neon green text will fade and we will become whole once again.

In honour of this momentous occasion XKCD altered its website. Man is it terrible in the best way possible. Those blinking stars in the background are enough to make your eyes bleed.

I love it! Check it out while you can!

Disfunction trumps talent in the new media.

Allan S. Hit the nail square on the head about that balloon boy that captured the news media today. About the family using this as a springboard into having a tv show.

Here is my comment on his post:
Something about the whole story as it was unfolding struck me as off. Then when i found out who the family was i knew it even before the balloon came down. I have seen two episodes of wife swap (honest!) and this family was one of them. The Dad is a bit narcissistic and 100% insane and his wife is a total enabler. The whole family was a train wreck. It makes one yearn for the days when fame was based on talent and not insanity.
I think it all ties into the social need we have to feel better than others. I can turn on Jon and kate plus 8 and watch her be a controlling bitch and him being a distant dickhead and feel better that at least i am not as fucked up as those guys. It used to be that fame was based on the principles of meritocracy. The talented cream rose to the top and was rewarded for it. Now it is the rotten apples and the bruised pears that seem to be getting all the attention.

Its almost enough to make one want to shut off the TV. Who am i kidding that will never happen.

I knew it!

Passive Agressive facebook notes

I love love love the passive aggressive notes website.

This gem popped up on my facebook friends feed. I had to make a screen shot of it before he was able to delete the comment. Made me laugh so hard.

I love the little heart at the end.

The ravages of time: final

I was saddened to find out that the neighbour who I talked about in this post passed away last night in the hospital where she had been since that May night. I knew that night was likely the last night she would spend in her own home and her own bed. I wish I had not been right.

Time will take us all. Enjoy it while you can people.

Being thankful

Happy thanksgiving day to all my canadian readers. I am so lucky with all the amazing gifts I have in my life.

The fella and I are spending the day in just the two of us gonna watch last night's episode of dexter and some movies and order in chinese food. No turkey for us today but I am ok with that.

We watched Zombieland last night. It was awesome. I am a big fan of zombie movies. I think this one was on par with shaun of the dead. Perhaps even better in some ways. Go check it out if you love humour and brain eating glory.

Attack of the Zombie Software development project

Work has been good the last little while with the exception of that software development project that most of my regular readers will know has become the bane of my existence. We want it done, they want it done. I just want to not have to deal with it anymore.

Also I think I am going to start saving up for one of these. I realized i spend 8 hours a day in this cheap ass uncomfortable chair at work that hurts the hell out of my back. I should invest in something nice.

Helloooo Nurse

The fella has been down with the flu the last two days. I have been trying to take care of him but it doesn't seem to be helping. He is sleeping a lot and managing to keep soup down though so that is something.

I am a little worried with all the talk of swine flu especially because Greg so rarely gets sick. I know most of it is overblown media hype but i still think about it. I guess irrational thoughts are another downside of being slightly obsessive compulsive and germphobic. Ahh the joys of personal insanity.

I have been feeling a little off myself the last two days. I am not sure if it is lack of sleep or me catching something but I feel foggy and out of focus.

Petty things that shouldn't bother me but do

So I frequent a bear site called bear411 its by far the most popular networking site that i know of for the gay bear community.

It is terribly coded and the owner has been accused of being overly judgemental and mean when selecting who can join the site.

Still its one of the most popular sites around and I tolerate it because its easy to use bookmarklets to view profile images without getting a paid account. Today they recoded the images so that the button (bookmarklet) i use no longer works.

Boo hiss bear411 boo hiss.

If heroes facebooked

Sometimes I wish i was clever enough to come up with stuff like this.

Another great article on the rape of the mental healthcare system in alberta

Those in the know are fighting back. It surprises me very little that the Stelmach government has not been consulting with the people in the trenches who are the real experts on Mental healthcare delivery in Alberta. I wonder who they did consult with. My bets are a marketing director and a budget analyst. Or perhaps they didn't bother to consult with anyone at all.

Public Transit porn

As many of you know I am a huge proponent of supporting public transport. The city of edmonton is now starting debate on some plans that I believe will revolutionize transport in the city. They really nailed it with this proposal. I hope it makes it into production.

Matt Tomljenovich, Amazing Race's super hot cub

*** Update I have posted some shirtless pics of Matt here***

I spent most of yesterday cuddled up on the couch watching TV and nursing an epic hangover from my birthday party on Saturday.

The highlight of the evening was definitely the amazing race. One of the new contestants is an ultra hot cub name Matt Tomlienovich.

I am soo hoping for some shirtless shots of him to come out.

This can't be a good sign

I don't know why but for some reason Lady Marmalade has been suck in my head all day mostly the portion sung by Christina Agulara. I don't know what my brain is trying to tell me but it can't be good.

I finally got my money back from the bank which is fantastic and means ill be able to buy some supplies for the epic toga/birthday party comin up.

I am on the last day of my detox. All in all it wasn't as tough as i expected. The booze was the easiest to go without. The cheese and deep fried food less so. I had about 4 slip ups but they were all worth it or due to a lack of alternatives. On the plus side at lunch today Erin mentioned that my skin looked great and that it looks like i have lost weight. I am gonna have to test this out when i get home. It's nice to have some good feedback. I don't feel much different but its nice to know i can set my mind to something and accomplish it. I just hope this going without helped my ulcer stabilize a bit.

That being said i still plan on partying it up this weekend, its gonna be fucking great!

Help prevent the alberta conservatives from repeating the mistakes of the past.

The alberta government has decided to close a large number of critical care beds in Alberta hospital.

Alberta hospital is a critical element of the health care system in Alberta. It provides numerous services for the mentally ill and distressed, services that are not available anywhere else in the province and services that are critical to the community.

The conservative party as a cost cutting measure has decided to close the hospital down. Stating that the individuals it served would be better served in the community. This is the same argument that drove the de-institutionalization movement in the 1970s.

The problem with this argument is in many ways de-institutionalization was a failure. Many of those displaced from care became homeless. Which is why today a disproportionately large amount of homeless suffer from mental illnesses. The community programs that were supposed to help better serve these people never materialized or were never properly supported.

Ed Stelmach wants to repeat this set of mistakes by closing the last true facility designed to deal with those people who can't be treated within the community. It is a massive mistake and I worry about what will happen to a group of people who's needs are not served by society and politicians.

I am working on getting some number from a few of my old psychology classes to give a full picture of what the government is really doing to the mentally ill here.

Check out this commercial by the aupe and go here to get a petition.
Mental illness can affect any family at any time please help save alberta hospital.

adventures In identity theft part 2

So I still have not been reimbursed for the amount stolen from me by the assholes who skimmed my debit card.

I get paid once a month at the end of the month which usually means I have to budget pretty tightly in order to have any cash the last week of the month. I am doubley fucked right now as all the careful budgeting in the world can not help an emptied account.

I am trying to get things ready for my birthday party this weekend but I can't go out and get anything till the bank reimburses me. I don't want to have to rely on the fella because that isnt fair to him.

Now that is fucking fierce

If any of you have not seen the nightline interview with Tyra banks you should check it out. It totally brings the LOLs. It was nice to see someone take her to task for being such a bitch to people. Her fake forced smile was totally worth it. Check out this parody video. Its awesome.

Favorite Story From The Frontlines On 9/12

"...How long ago was it that a black woman would be denied entrance to a whites-only restroom? Well, at one point in the afternoon, a white woman wearing a shirt that said "Kill Fags," which appeared to be a homemade silkscreen job, felt a similar call of nature. At the door of [A LOCAL SPORTS BAR], she met Matt [LAST NAME REDACTED], one of the bar's managers. He told her that she could not use the restroom.

"So you're refusing?" she asked.

"Yes," Matt said. "There's no public option here."

"Bastard," she said.

"I can do you one better," Matt said. "I suck cock."

He then put his tongue in his cheek and cupped his hand, moving it back and forth in front of his mouth in the internationally-recognized gesture for fellatio.

"I'm one of those," he said, pointing at her shirt. She left to find a bathroom more accommodating to her sort."

Adventures In identity theft

So i got a call this morning from the bank saying there has been some suspicious activity on my debit card.

Turns out they drained out my entire chequing account and almost a third of my savings.

I luckily had enough left for my mortgage payment today.

I am always very careful of where my card is swiped and who is watching when i put in my pin. What I don't understand is why they won't tell me where the skim of my card occurred. Wouldn't it benefit them to not have to deal with these thefts by educating customers to avoid certain places?

Calgary pride

Well greg and I made it home safe and sound from Calgary Pride.

It was a fantastic trip!

The wedding on saturday was amazing. They had it on the edge of a ravine that overlooked the hills and prairie all the way up to the rocky mountains.

Pride was good. The beer gardens were poorly run however and that was more than a little disappointing.

I am starting a two week detox with my buddy Eoin(well started yesterday). No fried food, caffeine, sweets, pop, booze or cheese. So far it is going well. I still feel run down however.

Sad but true Pt two

He wont leave me alone. His grammar is getting more confusing. I feel bad for the guy being so insecure.

Douchey guy: it does... but alas the main difference between garbage like you and I is... I don't need to validate my existence by having attached guys fulfill my insecurities. clearly, the path you're walking down is very successful. I spent my year and a half in purgatory. now I am back in Toronto. thank-god and by-the-way it's not... "your still floating around..." it's you're. you're far too ugly to have attitude buddy

Czarcub: Seems to me like i have things pretty good. Great boyfriend, fantastic friends, fulfilling job, a house, a car and a cat.

Seems to me like i don't have much to be insecure about.

I am not the one here with insecurity issues. You messaged me with the attitude. Scream for attention somewhere else princess and take you judgmental heteronormative attitude with you.

Since Halifax didn't work and neither did alberta maybe you should try the priesthood. I here they love judgy fugly fucked up bitches there.

This will be my last response to him. I have to many good things to celebrate.

Sad but true

I have not been randomly attacked online in a while. This one was from a guy I met at camping.

We chatted for a while about a year ago and I got tired of his bitchy demeanour and general negativity.

The funny thing is wasn't even cruising online when I got this message. I would say 90% of my gay friends are on Bear411. It has been the centre of my online life for years, long before facebook became popular (that is kinda sad all on its own). I couldn't help but reply.

CHRISHALIFAX:don't you have a boyfriend? don't you think it's just SLIGHTLY trashy to be cruising on chat?

CZARCUB (me): What we do under the auspices of our relationship is not your business. Glad your still floating around putting so much positive energy out into the world. I am sure that is doing well for you...

It may be raining but the storm clouds are gone

I didn't sleep a wink last night. But for some reason I am still in a really good mood.

Heres some dreamy friday tunes from empire of the sun.

Have a great long weekend everyone!

Snow Leopard and a dead Server Admin

At my work we have two xserves running leopard server 10.5.8 . Overall they have been very easy to manage (however the 10.5.8 update did mess up one of the system's static IP addresses).

I have upgraded my office system to snow leopard. Of course with any upgrade there is bound to be trouble. Crossover (which is currently my favorite app) needs to be updated as it no longer runs.

Worst of all Server Admin was unable to access my xserves. Every time it connected you would get:
Server admin wants to use the "PrivateEncryptedDatak" keychain
Of course no matter what you enter as the password the password gets rejected and Server Admin can not connect to the xserve. Now there is very little about this message in relation to Snow leopard so I had to do some research. Apparently it related to Adobe AIR.

Now I have never had a reason to use adobe AIR and as far as i am concerned it is useless bloatware.

To fix this problem simply uninstall adobe AIR by going to utilities and selecting the handy uninstall app. Voila problem fixed and Server Admin is able to connect. Hope this saves some people some grief.

Dodging Disaster

Today I had to re-register my car. In typical airhead fashion I went to the registries office without my insurance. I walk back home and start searching my car for my insurance.

After tearing it apart I find an old copy of my insurance that expired in like 2008. After a frantic search of my filing cabinet i managed to find a pristine pink card in some insurance documents. I have been driving for almost a year without my insurance in my car.

It would have been a huge fine I think if I had been stopped without it.

Its a good thing I walk almost everywhere.

Man i can be such a flake sometimes.

Swift Summer

It seems as of last thursday fall is beginning to loom on the horizon. Even though today is warm and sunny with not a cloud in the sky you can still feel it. Smell it.

On Saturday we took the super cool Edmonton Street car over to the the Edmonton Fringe Festival. Unfortunately all the shows we wanted to see were sold out. So the highlight was sitting at the beer gardens soaking up the heat and the delicious grasshopper beer. We ended up meeting up with some friends from Vancouver and showing them around a bit. It was a great weekend but i can't help feeling it was the last true one of the summer.

Aquatic assault by the bears!

Photos are still trickling out from the fantastic gay campout we went to August long. They had those inflatable pools filled with very cold water.

As with all pools there is always some bullies. It seems being 5'4 makes me an automatic target for these guys.

Apparently when my nuts hit cold water I get automatic gay face ... At least you can't here my masculine screams ;)

DADT another reason why the US is totally ridiculous sometimes

It boggles my mind that the archaic DADT policy is still in place in the US especially given the fact that in Canada and Britain we have had openly gay service members for ages now. How do the conservative arguments stand up when there are clear examples that it does not negatively affect the troops.

A blogger whom I had the pleasure to meet a BEEF bear party last fall Justin Elzie has written an excellent article on the subject that you can read here. Justin has first hand knowledge of the inner workings and effect of DADT on a person's life and it is a good read.

The return of music

Sometimes when you get so wrapped up in work and the bullshit that goes along with it you forget the simple things in life that make you happy.

I think most of my posts this week will be dealing with this theme. So far I am working on rediscovering drawing, music and cooking.

I have not listened to any new music in so long. So many of my favorite bands have released some great new tunes and I have let them slip by. I went on a bit of a downloading frenzy a week or so ago and have been re-immersing myself in music. My soul feels lighter for it.

So far my favorite rediscovery has been Metric who i have mentioned a few times on the blog. They put on perhaps the best live show I have ever seen. I am glad there new album fantasies is so damn good.

Since I ended up working extra hours from 12 to 2:30 am last night i felt this song was appropriate.

CUBFORCE 5 (ish): Introducing Bear-Boy!

I will be doing a series of these in an attempt to get my drawing skills back to where they were a year or so ago. It had been so long since i have drawn anything. I am trying to find my style again. This one is done in a completely different manner than I usually draw so it is a bit rough. More realistic will never be my thing i think.

Review: District 9

We just got out of the opening for District 9. By Neill Blomkamp the movie is the best sci fi movie and possibly the best movie I have seen in over 4 years.

Shot on a shoestring budget in semi-documentary style District 9 is a gritty allegory for aparthied and a scathing commentary on human nature. It was funny gory intense nerve wracking to watch.

I almost had to look away at some points.

The cgi prawn creatures were by far the most realistic cgi i have ever seen. Every moment and every effect was done to perfection. There were so many WOW SHIT that was awesome moments.

I may go see it again this weekend. You should see it soon.

Paperless Generation

I have been doing my best the last few months to be less wasteful and more organized when it comes to paper. Basically I am trying to go paperless.

At work this has been a tougher battle than I had anticipated. We are a multi-generational office with a couple of young people and a larger group of older people (50+). The younger group is trying to push things to a paperless system (electronic faxes and document storage). There has been a lot of resistance from the old guard to moving in this direction.

Watching how much they waste paper is ridiculous. Our vp of operations uses a rolodex of cards she has had since 1995. It has since fallen off the roll and now sits in a cardbox like an old school library. These guys are the types that will print off an email and hand it out to people in the office (that makes me wince every time). Even when I ask for something to be emailed to me I get a paper copy from them. It is like they can not read anything unless it is printed out.

In some ways i think it truly is a generational thing. I think my mom is the same way. Its like tangibility makes something more legitimate. Me all i see is sad dead trees and waste.

Oh Apple how i love thee

I just found out that I am getting the brand new operating system (os x 10.6 snow leopard) for both of my new xserves for a grand total of $19.00

Thank you Up-to-date program!

Oh I will give you a double double

Joe.My.God reported today Tim Horton's a canadian donut chain that is also owned by the same group that owns Wendys is sponsering a National Organization for Marriage anti-gay event in Rhode Island.

For those of you who don't know NOM was responsible for those terrible lie filled anti-gay "gathering storm" ads. They are also one of the major sources of anti gay activity in the states. For a major canadian chain to allow one of there locations to sponsor this type of event is unacceptable. You can let corporate know how displeased you are with them for allowing their name and logo to be used by bigots here:

Tim Hortons has given a response. I wonder how this slipped through their approval machine. Usually with franchises you can't even fart without permission from head office.

Tim Hortons responds to inquiries about Rhode Island event sponsorship

Recently, Tim Hortons was approached in Rhode Island to provide free coffee and products for a local event, as we do thousands of times a year across Canada and the United States.

For 45 years, Tim Hortons and its store owners have practiced a philosophy of giving back to the communities in which we operate. As a company, our primary focus is on helping children and supporting fundraising events for non-profit organizations and registered charities.

For this reason, Tim Hortons has not sponsored those representing religious groups, political affiliates or lobby groups.

It has come to our attention that the Rhode Island event organizer and purpose of the event fall outside of our sponsorship guidelines. As such, Tim Hortons can not provide support at the event.

Tim Hortons and its store owners have always welcomed all families and communities to its restaurants and will continue to do so. We apologize for any misunderstanding or inconvenience this may have caused.

Hat tip to Anna. This is brilliant!

OS X xserve review

Work this week was kind of hellish. I had a 16 hour day on monday. About 2 weeks ago we got 2 brand new xserves which are mac osx servers.

Now I am many things ("a sure thing" says the red deer boys) but I am no server expert. While they certainly were not as simple to set up as apple advertises. Now that I am in the groove and have had a few long nights configuring them (it is amazing what one checkmark on a preference pane can fuck up) I am enjoying the experience. Before we were running everything on a fedora server that had to be managed by an outside contractor who's availability was sketchy at best.

Now I can control my whole server room from my laptop anywhere in the world. It really is fantastic. They are so powerful.

There are some limitations that make me rather frustrated. Apple advertises its server admin app as a one stop location to control your entire server. This is definitely not the case. The server apps feel a little half baked and flakey. Kind of slow to respond and crash often they are definitely not what what I expect from my apple experience.

The other major limitation is the lack of a php customization GUI built in. It would be so great if they included one like they do with apache. Maybe now that they are no longer pushing webobjects they can push for some increased support for php and mysql in the next version of server.

So I was a little disappointed with the xserve experience but now that things are up and running I am loving it.

Gay Camping CUBFORCE 5 (ish) update

Gay camping was fantastic.

Day 1: Things get a little crazy when Ryan digs into his birthday gift (a 40 or jager) and we all proceed to get rather drunk and dance our assess off
at the hall. I wake up with a small chip in my tooth from a beer bottle and ryan wakes up with mustard all over his face. Everyone else wakes up unscathed but mildly hungover (except for the fella who never gets hangovers that bastard). It was awesome.

Day 2: I learn what a dental dam is. We cavort in the p
ool and generally enjoy the wonderful weather. CUBFORCE 5 (ish) debuts its superhero aw
esomeness. We are one member short because one of us stayed in Calgary. We had the Cub Scout, Lesbian Lumberjack (i think Lumberjane would have been a good name), Bear Boy and PowerFIST. The team and costumes were a big hit. So many awesome groups showed up there was one that was the whole batman family (they even had a bat cave base!). We partied it up again and generally had a fantastic time.

Day 3: Worn out from the last two nights we go into town where Matt and Randall make us the best breakfast I have had in years. While there i get called "a sure thing" by the boys. This thought perplexes me for the rest of the day. It took 4 hours to eat and get back to the campsite. We missed out on the majority of the mud wrestling but spent the rest of the day nursing hangovers and hanging out with the bears in the pool. The rain starts and continues almost all night but does not slow down the
partying in the hall. It was a much more mellow night that the previous ones. Everyone is tired and their livers are on the cusp of complete failure. Jim turns into a drag queen however (sans dress) and proceeds to dance the night away.
Day 4: Home time. Time to pack up soggy tents and drive home. I have a wicked bad sore throat and I am tiiiiired.

Webcrimes Case 7: Sometime I do not understand people who have vaginas

This weekend's gay campout was super super fun. So epic and educational.
I learned about a hair product called bumpits. When i read that title i see the word bum pits rather than the intended Bump its. Already I am worried about where this case is going to take me.

So before i start this rant let me say. I think these things are insane and totally ridiculous. The fact that there is a market for these th
ings makes me worry about the future of the human race.

The website is a mix of hapazard font design and pixelated pictures of women who I think are supposed to look stylish. I almost wonder if this was created by a man who was trying to appeal to feminine sensibilities but said male had never seen or met a woman before in real life.

I can almost hear this designer thinking "Hmmmm the word happy is not feminine enough What if i make the font pink, hmm no that may be a bit too much and i dont want it to blend in with the rest of the pink on this page. Hmm I will make it a super elegant font , yes thats in the right direction but still not girly enough. I know! I will misspell happy to make it girly!"

Fucking brilliant.

Add to that a mix webcrime staples of blinking gifs frameand terrible 3d rendered clip art (roman columns) and you have a very classic and feminine disaster.

You need to watch the comercial video below.

Gay Camping Debuts: CUBFORCE FIVE!

This weekend is the gay campout at blackfalds.

I am super excited as not only am i taking today off to get down there early (for a primo spot). But this year's theme is superheros and villians. Our group is going as CUBFORCE 5 which is the logo I posted a little while back.

My costume and origin story is ready (almost). There should be many pictures and much hilarity.

I will be back on monday!

Massive Bear party success

The BEEF bear bash on saturday was a massive huge success. It took me a day or so to recover and some even longer than that.

It was far more work than I anticipated getting everything organized and we almost had a few near disasters but it worked out great thanks to the many volunteers.

The BBQ during the day was well attended ( i was at work so I missed out on that part). Attendance was up from last year's bbq but Daren still made way too much food (he is such a baba).

The party was packed and the charity jock auction went even better. We managed to raise over 1500 dollars for the pride center. This totally blew me away as I had expected maybe to raise 600 bucks. This was also the highest grossing fundraiser the bar had seen in a long time. Greg did really well he came in third raising over $300 for his jock. My fella is a hottie!

Jaret did a fantastic job of getting everyone ready and organized and basically told me to go get drunk and enjoy myself and let him take care of the raffle.

I took his advice and promptly had a boozy fun time.

I can't wait for the next one in October!

Support your Queer Blogs

I have recently been added to a queer canadian blog list. There are some great blogs on there to check out!
You can find it here.

The fertile chef

I am a food network dork. I think that and HGTV canada take up much of my tv viewing hours. Other than dick in butt porn nothing pleases me more than watching food being made. While my favorite show is probably diners drive-ins and dives i pretty much love most of the shows on that network.

One of those shows is the Iron Chef america. Today i found out that my fav chef Cat Cora (anyone that does a sambuca shot after every contest gets my vote) just had a baby with her girlfriend (the second one for them this year). Kudos ladies!

Retro 90's rock party

On the way down to the campsite sonic was doing a 90's alterantive rock weekend. The ride down was filled with some classic canadian alternative rock that I grew up with. One of my favs is stereo by the watchmen.

Great lyrics and great beats such a classic!

Fuck powerpoint!

I want one! I am not even sure what I would do with it but this has got to be one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

Note of advice: If you are going to back out of doing something that you promised to do like host a BBQ. Have a little courtesy and give me more than 2 days warning.

Especially because you knew this two months ago.

Fruit Float 2009

As a welcome change to the misery that is my work life my weekend was totally fantastic. We went camping near red deer for my buddy Craig's birthday. His family has a fantastic campsite right on the red deer river. It was pretty amazing.

On saturday we spent 7 and a half hours floating down the river. The weather was perfect and the company was good. We had planned for a 5 hour float but the river was slow. The only problem was we ran out of booze about half way through and Greg managed to get the worst tube sunburn I have ever seen (he even managed to burn his armpits!).

I even experienced one of those perfect moments where everything comes together perfectly and you want for nothing and all your cares slip away. Floating on that tube in the refreshing water with the sun beating down on me surrounded by friends. It really was great. That may even become my new happy place.

Here are some pics:

Media in review

So we there has been a ton happening in my world of entertainment. Here are some lightening reviews of the stuff Greg and I have seen and been enjoying.

  • UP: Offbeat, made me tear up a few times. Go see this you will love it. SQUIRREL!
  • Bruno: Disappointing but had its moments.
  • Harry Potter and the half blood prince: A chick flick disguised as a harry potter movie. It was still good but I wanted more action!
  • True Blood: Season 1 Worth it for the one liners alone. It has rapidly become my new favorite show.
  • True Blood: Season 2 Looks like it is shaping up to be a great new season with the addition of my all time favorite character actress Michelle Forbes
  • Torchwood: We have been burning through the far superior season 2 in preparation for season 3. I love how post gay it is.
  • Canada's Next top Model: This season has blown away anything I have seen in Tyra's bloated worn out offerings the last 3 years. Host and producer Jay Manuel (Mr. J) really pulled out all the stops and showed how this franchise could really churn out the entertainment. If you are a fan at all of the US version you should check this out and see how great it is without Tyra. Worth it for just Jay's subtle jabs at tyra. Go Linsay!!
