Perfect timing?

This is a shout out to my cousins Johnny and April (April is a regular commenter on here) who both welcomed new babies into the world today.

Johnny and his girlfriend had a 6 pound baby boy and April welcomed an 8.5 pound baby girl.

Congratulations guys!

It's funny to note that johnny and april are brother and sister and today is my Dad's birthday. This bodes well for me as I am pathologically unable to remember dates most specifically birthdays so the more we can stack on one day the better.

Which reminds me I had better call my dad.

This makes my web dork happy

Judgmental browser based splash pages.

I just want to....

The weekend in calgary was so much fun. It was scandalous hilarious and I am still a bit hungover.

The only down side is for some reason I have had this song stuck in my head for 4 days:

Alberta catches up on gay rights... maybe

I have lived in this often backwards province my whole life. As long as I can remember gay rights has been a contentious issue often used by conservative groups as a tool to ruin parties on the left. It seems like the days where gay rights can be used as a tool by members of the ruling conservative party are over.

The end comes surprisingly from within the party itself. I had a feeling that premier Ed Stelmach was going to be far more friendly to gay rights than the drunk was. I guess having a family member who is openly gay (and rather prominent in the community) helps a lot for tolerance.

So it looks like within a year or so Alberta will catch up to the supreme court decision that enshrined gay rights into Alberta law over 10 years ago. Adding this law to our charter of human rights.

This is a big victory for many of those who fought this government tooth and nail for so many years since the Delwin Vriend case and earlier.

Better late than never.

Would you like some of Big Jon Runyan

Who doesn't love a big beefy football player who is willing to play with masculinity stereotypes with a slight gay overtone to them.

Yes sir i would indeed love to have some of big Jon. I may even come back for seconds.

And people say the apple tax is bad

This made me laugh. It is so true.

You get what you pay for ladies and gents.

Ahhh blogging is a wondrous thing

So i have been checking out my statcounter logs just to see who is coming and going and in general on how the blog is doing. Overall readership is steadily going up and it seems like a lot of people are coming here for technical support issues for macs and less for gay related things.

In fairness now that I am out I write much less on the subject of coming out and on being gay in a conservative environment.

Looking at my keyword analysis however provided some odd information. Its funny how the internet works but for some reason google directed someone to by blog who was looking for "60 year old Hoties"

Now this is fine but isnt it spelled hotties? Additionally it is unlikely you will find such content here. On occasion i shall post a beefy hottie or two but 60 is generally out of my picture porn range.

Carry on I suppose...

somewhere in between

I have had so many things to blog about but lack of effort and flu have limited my need to do so.

So here is a quick summary of some big things that have been happening:

1. BEEF the Alberta Bear Bash party that I organize was a massive massive success. We broke a bar attendance record and sales record. The Bar was stuffed to capacity from about 9 pm on. Now that I am officially a party planner of sorts I have some big ideas for the next one. Beer tub cubs and a charity Jock strap auction. If you have a local queer cause that is looking for a sponsor please let me know. I am leaning towards putting the proceeds to the embattled Edmonton Pride Center who has been seriously fucked over the last few years.

2. Greg has been working his new job since monday and it seems to be going really well so far. The company has a silly name so I won't be sharing it here but it seems cool so far. I do kind of miss coming home and having him there getting supper ready. Its nice to have a houseboy. So we are officially looking for a new houseboy. Pay is negligible but you get to wear a kick ass uniform and rent is cheap.

3. The house i am in love with keeps dropping in price. Its killing me that I can't afford to sell my place and buy it right now.

4. On that note I am seriously considering renting out my spare bedroom for some extra income. It looks very likely that Ryan and Jim will be staying in Calgary for the next year or 2 so there is no point in me keeping Ryan's room empty.

5. We decided to go on an impromptu road trip this weekend to Calgary to hang out with the boys. This was needed after we found out my house boating trip this summer has been cancelled.

6. So after going without my tummy meds for about 2 weeks my perpetual heartburn is back. I need to go back onto them to get my ulcer back under control.

This is why no one likes the cops

I have blogged about the horrible organizational culture that exists within the edmonton city police department a few times already.

As far as I am concerned there is a culture of arrogant entitlement that pervades the whole organization. I can't tell you how many times i have read a newspaper article talking about the shit officers get away with. The problem is the review boards, upper management and the judiciary system all seem to support the often shocking behavior that you would expect to see coming out of a city in Russia.

I have known some people working behind the scenes with the police commission and the department's upper management who are trying to improve the image of the force. I have also had some conversations with people who have worked at prosecuting officers in cases of wrongdoing. The is much discussion behind the scenes about how to improve the general image of the department in the eyes of the public. I don't think this will ever happen until officers start being held accountable for outrageous behavior. Sadly from the discussions I had I don't think this will ever happen before something more serious occurs. There really does seem to be a protective wall around the rank and file members of the force that prevents them at every level from having to face the consequences of their actions.

Today is no different. The journal has a fairly good article reporting that four city police officers have been cleared in the now infamous Overtime surveillance scandal. Full article here.
Again these officers are getting away with dangerous and politically motivated disturbing behavior. Now that's not so say these officers are bad people. I happen to have worked with one of the accused officers on a project a few years ago and not only was he a really nice guy (and damn hot) but I knew he really cared about what he did.

The problem is when the system supports and allows this unacceptable kind of behavior it means the good officers will be able to make ethically poor decisions without consequence. We all see how well that worked for the US financial system.

Unless there is accountability there can be no trust.

Harsh Reality

As some of you may know Tuesdays at my place is usually Gay reality tv night. We watch project runway canada and Rupaul's Drag Race. I should note that in canada we are a week behind on Drag Race so we have yet to see the finale.

Usually its a great chance to hang out and make catty comments about catty people. Last night's episodes however were less than fulfilling.

***** Spoilers Ahead******

The shenanigans last night that the producers pulled on Project Runway were total bullshit. Unlike last year when the mid season return of a contestant was a welcome event. Bringing back two recently booted contestants (that in my opinion got the boot legitimately) at the expense of one incredibly talented (Adejoke this means you) contestant and Kim was complete bullshit.

Made worse by the fact that the dresses done by the two returning contestants were not even close to as good as Sonny and Biffy's yet somehow they managed to tie them?

Fuck that.

Drag Race was not much better. How the pretty but ultimately useless Rebecca Glasscock keeps making it though I have no idea. I think Ru has a crush on the bitch or something. Chanel was by far the most talented drag queen on the damn show. Yes she was arrogant, needy and a bit of a bitch but thats the fucking point isn't it? Next time i am in vegas I am gonna see her show. Anyone who can juggle and still look fierce in a rhinestone g-string is Ok in my book.

Ok Rant over

Battlestar wrapup

Its been so many years since i fell in love with the series.

So many cliffhangers deaths and kick ass space battles to get to this point.

I loved the way it ended. But somehow I still wanted more (other than to have the chief in my bedroom wearing a jock).

I guess with anything they couldn't answer all the red herrings and plot mysteries.

So happy. I can't wait for the box set so i can watch it from beginning to end.

Bravo to the cast and crew bravo!

for the fella

Greg is off to an interview at 3 today. I really hope he does well.

The dangers of daylight savings...

Its been a common thought that daylight savings tends to cause more car crashes. The going theory is that people are drowsy from the hour of sleep lost and therefore make poor decisions. Commonly it is known that it is the most dangerous time of year to be a pedestrian and crossing the road.

While stats don't lie I have unfortunately been given some first hand knowledge of this phenomena.

My mom called me last night and she sounded like shit. She goes on to say that she has some bad news and that both her and my dad were in separate car accidents. My dad's accident was the worst, a woman making a left hand turn didn't see him coming and he t-boned her across 4 lanes of traffic. Thankfully he and the woman he hit are fine. His car is totaled however, which to my dad is akin to having his legs and arms torn off. He loves those cars more than anything. My mom's accident was much more minor and everyone is ok from that one as well. What kills me though is she talked for like 10 min straight before she would tell me everyone was was ok. What a drama queen!

I came into work today to find out that 2 of my co-worker's kids also got into some serious accidents.

So please everyone exercise some caution when out on the roads today and please look both ways before crossing the street!

An Open Letter to IMAX

Last night my friends and I went to go see a certain superhero epic at an IMAX theatre. Now yes your screen size is impressive and your sound system is bangin but seriously if i have to sit through your introductory laser show pissing contest one more time I am going to scream.

You see IMAX you have had pretty much the same laser show introduction to your massive theater system since I have been going to IMAX when i was 6. As a bright eyed 6 year old your fancy laser show and self flagellation was impressive and really cool. The problem is that was 1988 and you haven't changed anything since. 20 god damn years and no changes!

Seriously its 2009 and all you can manage is a fucking lame bare bones graphic laser show and horrifically dated audio production. Pull your heads out of your asses. No one wants to sit for 10-15 minutes watching you jerk off about how awesomely big your junk is. You could easily par down the show to a 3 min semi 3d demo with a cool audio visualizer like milkdrop. All you are doing right now is making yourself look dated and ridiculous. Do you like the fact that everyone was laughing at you and not cheering with you as you flaunt your 6 story screen.

And by the way we decided in the car ride home that the best and final use of lasers was in the Jennifer Lopez video waiting for tonight. So unless you can do something fresh or better than that it is best to pack that shit away to 1984 where it belongs.

Thanks you for your time.

A concerned theater goer.

How to use Windows Live hotmail with Safari 4 Beta

As you know from my previous post I am a little irked that my hotmail does not work on Safari 4 which has rapidly become my default browser because it is teh awesome. The problem is the page loads just fine but when you try and click on your email to view them nothing happens. Up until now i had been switching over to firefox to access my hotmail account now i don't have to.

Microsoft has not been much help but I have figured out a pretty simple fix.

Go to
  1. Go to safari -> Preferences
  2. Select the advanced tab
  3. Click the checkbox that says "show develop menu in menu bar"
  4. The develop menu should now appear in your menu bar at the top of the screen between bookmarks and window.
  5. To use your hotmail or Microsoft live account go and login as you normally would.
  6. Go to Develop -> User Agent here you will find a list of different popular browsers. I think this basically will make Safari 4 work like the bowser you select from this list.
  7. Dont bother with using any of the internet explorer agents none of them work. Select the "Firefox 3.0.5 windows" version.
  8. Your page should reload and voila you can access your emails again.
This will allow you to access all of your emails and interact with your hotmail normally. Additionally you do not have to worry about changing this setting back to continue browsing as once you close your window Safari will go back to default.

the best laid plans...

I was going to be super productive today..
I had big blogging plans.

For some reason I am completely bagged. I didn't sleep to well last night. I had intense dreams about the end of the world and web-browser UI design. Note to self do not blog rant before bed it leads to bad dreams.

I want to nap...

Fuck you Microsoft.

So i have been playing with safari 4 beta the last while.

It is smoking fast and it has pretty much replaced firefox as my main browser.

It loads pages retarded fast even heavy pages like xtube eerrrr youtube render amazingly well.

The cover flow history feature is also super cool and runs surprisingly well even on my macbook.

The one problem i have is on hotmail.

You see microsoft builds a lot of their sites to run on microsoft explorer. Explorer without a doubt has horrifically bad web standards support. As a web designer i have spent a ton of hours making up for it's terrible inability to render pages they way they are supposed to display. Now some people will claim that Microsoft does this to make it so people can only use explorer to properly surf the web. I personally think they do it because they don't give a fuck about web standards.

So i have been totally unable to read any email on my hotmail account on safari and it is as usual because Microsoft is about 10 years behind the times.
